About this species
Eastern Blue-tongue
Tiliqua scincoides
The Eastern Blue-tongue is one of Australia's largest and most familiar skinks — a slow, heavy-bodied lizard often found basking on suburban paths and in gardens as readily as in open woodland. Its broad, banded body and short legs make it unmistakable, but its real signature is the deep-blue tongue it flashes when threatened, a sudden splash of colour meant to startle a predator long enough to escape. Unhurried and mild-mannered, it shelters under logs and leaf litter, feeding on snails, insects and fallen fruit — the quiet sentinel of the backyard, rendered thread for thread into The Sentinel.
