Varanus giganteus
The Perentie is the largest monitor lizard in Australia and one of the biggest in the world, reaching well over two metres from snout to tail. A creature of the arid interior, it patrols the red deserts and rocky ranges with a slow, deliberate stride, then breaks into astonishing speed when hunting or fleeing — even rearing up on its hind legs to survey the ground.
